- Post Malone just announced that he would be putting on a Nirvana tribute concert to honor Kurt Cobain.
- Post Malone is the antithesis of Kurt Cobain and Nirvana.
- He should honor Kurt Cobain by covering someone more on his level, like the Backstreet Boys or Limp Bizkit.
The ground was shaking for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, but not because of the earthquake in Los Angeles. It was Kurt Cobain churning in his grave after Post Malone announced he would be putting on a tribute for the fallen rock star.
Hey Post Malone, Stick to Rap, Or Whatever You’re Doing
Look, I don’t want to hate on Post Malone. He’s doing a good thing by putting on a concert where he’ll also be taking donations for COVID-19 relief efforts.
But why, Post Malone, are you covering Nirvana? What would Kurt Cobain think about a face-tattooed millennial belting out an auto-tuned pop version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit”?
I don’t think Kurt Cobain was ever jamming with the band in his garage, thinking, “how can we water this down for mainstream consumption?”
Just because Post Malone has face tattoos doesn’t mean he’s “punk-rock” or “grungey.” He let Charlamagne the God walk all over him during this interview:
Kurt Cobain Is a Hero, Post Malone Is a Guitar Hero
Does Post even know what he’s talking about in most of his songs? Check out these lyrics from “Psycho”:
My roof look like a no-show, got diamonds by the boatload
Don’t act like you my friend when I’m rollin’ through my ends, though
Wow, a true master at work. A rapper who talks about money and diamonds? Surely, this is the type of artistry best to represent one of the greatest rock bands of all-time.
At least Post started with punk-rock roots, right?
Well, no, not at all. Post Malone got his start where all great musicians get their start: Guitar Hero.
From there, the musical wunderkind moved onto Fruity Loops. If you don’t know, Fruity Loops is where rappers go to make their beats when they don’t really know what they’re doing.
I started off making crazy, weird techno. I had no clue what I was doing. Then my dad liked some stuff so I kept doing it.
Oh man, good thing your dad liked it. Otherwise, we would never be blessed with a soundtrack for Spider-Man. Kurt Cobain wouldn’t be caught dead creating music for a corporate franchise like Spider-Man. Even though he, sadly, was caught dead in Captain Marvel.
Kurt Cobain Is the Real Deal
Kurt Cobain became a musician because he had to. He came from a broken home. His parents divorced when he was a child, and after causing trouble for a few years, he found salvation in music. Once he formed Nirvana, he quickly rose through the underground music scene in Seattle.
Post Malone discovered music through a video game and only pushed through because he had full support from his family. He quickly left Texas and moved straight to LA, the place people go when they want to become famous.
Post Malone should not be covering Nirvana. He should be covering Backstreet Boys like Lil Uzi Vert. Even better, he should be covering Limp Bizkit.
They, like Post Malone, started off doing something slightly different. Just like Posty, they weren’t quite rap, although they sure tried. Fred Durst and the boys were part-rap, part-rock, they found fame quickly despite having little-to-no depth to their thoughts or lyrics.
But it was fun for a time. And that’s the exact trajectory for Post Malone. There’s nothing wrong with it, but don’t pretend you’re some kind of musical god in line with Nirvana. Post Malone, you should listen to Kurt Cobain’s words and ‘come as you are.’
